Climbing Toys That Match How Toddlers Actually Move

Between 10 months and four years, kids need to climb. A Pikler triangle, climbing arch, or balance board lets them do it on something built for their weight and reach — not your bookshelf. Three things to check before you buy:

  • Wood type — beech and birch ply hold up to climbing torque better than pine. Look for the specific wood named in the product description
  • Rung spacing — wider gaps (around 15 cm) suit toddlers; narrower (10 cm) suit younger climbers
  • Foldability and weight rating — most triangles fold under 10 cm thick and hold up to 50 kg, enough through age 5–6

If you're new to Montessori-style movement, start with a Pikler triangle for ages 1–4, or a balance board for ages 6 months and up — both grow with the child for years.
